Provenance: the collection of Selden Rodman, the author of the landmark 1948 book Renaissance in Haiti; the collection of author and historian Marcus Rediker, Pittsburgh, PA. The Haitian Revolution began on August 14th, 1791, when Dutty Boukman presided over a Vodou ceremony that came to be known as Bois Caiman.
