Jeanne Donnedieu
(French, born 1864)
Quietude, 1893, signed upper left "J. Donnedieu", oil on canvas, 54 x 34-7/8 in.; original giltwood frame, with foliate cushion, 84 x 45-1/2 x 3-1/2 in.
Provenance: Christie's London, UK, February 16, 1989, lot 25; Private Collection
Note: Jeanne Donnedieu was a Parisian painter who trained under two accomplished academic artists, Jacques-Eugene Feyen (1815-1908) and Henri-Leopold Levy (1840-1904). Her association with Feyen and Levy places her within the tradition of late nineteenth-century French academic painting, while her repeated participation in the Salon during the years 1885-1900 reflects her engagement with the principal exhibition venue through which artists sought recognition in the French art world of the period. Her work is now comparatively scarce, making surviving paintings by Donnedieu of particular interest in documenting the work of women artists active in the Parisian art establishment at the end of the nineteenth century.
