Jeff Davis Signed Check to "Orphan Home" w/Tie to A. Lincoln, PSA Slabbed NM-7
Slabbed Signed Check

Jefferson Davis (1808-1889). A compelling signed check for $50.00 from Davis's account at the Savings Bank of Memphis made payable to J.G. Dupree on behalf of the Orphan Home of Mississippi. The check offers an unusual connection to not only Jefferson Davis but 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. Signed "Jefferson Davis" in lower right, dated November 11, 1871, a paid stamp can be found on verso. Measures 7.75" x 2.75". Wear includes light age toning, gentle wrinkles, and uneven edges, else very good. PSA certified, graded NM 7, and encapsulated to an overall size of 12.5" x 5.5".

In February 1865, W.W. Keep, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Orphan Home of the State of Mississippi, petitioned Jefferson Davis for assistance in transporting cotton through Confederate lines so it could ultimately be sold to obtain supplies for the orphanage. The request subsequently reached Lincoln who endorsed the undertaking on March 18, 1865. Davis had endorsed the petition on March 3 making it the only document signed by both the President of the United States, and the President of the Confederate States!

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
