Jerry O. Wilkerson
Texas, Missouri, (1943 - 2007)
American Still Life No. 2, 1976
acrylic on canvas
Property from the Saint Louis Art Museum, sold to benefit the Acquisitions fund
Provenance: Thomas Alexander
This piece is an exciting example of modern art, reminiscent of Roy Lichtensteins use of "comic dots" , Wilkerson's pointillism is a breath of fresh air since the style began with Georges Seurat. The piece was originally on loan to the museum by the artist himself and was then purchased for the museum by Thomas Alexander. It was then loaned to the Missouri Governor's office in the 1990's where it was displayed in Jefferson City.
Wilkerson's work has a sense of playfulness to it, especially with most of his subjects revolving around food. He was a well-known artist in the St. Louis Area and taught at Washington University for a number of years. His work is displayed all over the country from Tucson Museum of Art to the Baltimore Museum of Art.
