"The Painted Bird", Jerzy Kosinski, Second Edition, Revised with An Introduction by the Author, published by Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1976. First Printing of this edition [number 1 is present in the number line].

Originally published in 1965, "The Painted Bird" established Jerzy Kosinski as a major literary figure. It has been translated into more than thirty languages. This second edition, complete and revised, incorporates changes that did not appear in the original edition and includes an illuminating introduction by the author.

Kosinski's story follows a dark-haired, olive-skinned boy, abandoned by his parents during World War II, as he wanders alone from one village to another, sometimes hounded and tortured, only rarely sheltered and cared for. Through the juxtaposition of adolescence and the most brutal of adult experiences, Kosinski sums up a Bosch-like world of harrowing excess where senseless violence and untempered hatred are the norm. Through sparse prose and vivid imagery, Kosinski's novel is a story of mythic proportion, even more relevant to today's society than it was upon its original publication.

Jerzy Kosinski (1933-1991), born Jozef Lewinkopf, was a Polish-American novelist and two-time President of the American Chapter of P.E.N., who wrote primarily in English. Born in Poland, he survived World War II and, as a young man, immigrated to the U.S., where he became a citizen. He was known for various novels, among them "The Painted Bird" (1965) and "Being There" (1970), which was adapted as a film.

Jerzy Kosinski won the National Book Award in Fiction for "Steps", France's Best Foreign Book Award for "The Painted Bird", and has received the National Institute of Arts and Letters' Award in Literature. His other novels include "The Devil Tree", and "Cockpit".

Mr. Kosinski has taught English at Weslayan, Princeton and Yale, and frequently lectures at universities and colleges throughout the country.
