Jesse Cargill (American, 1892-1977) The Autograph Collector and Lead in Our Pants, Central Press Association Syndicated newspaper cartoons (two works), circa 1935; September 1942 India ink and lithographic crayon on heavyweight paper 15-1x4 x 12 inches (38.7 x 30.5 cm) (The Autograph Collector, image) 14 x 12 inches (35.6 x 30.5 cm) (Lead in Our Pants, image) Each signed in lower region: Cargill Jesse Taylor Cargill served in the U.S. Navy in World War I and afterwards enrolled at the Chicago Art Institute and studied under cartoonist Carey Orr. In 1924 he became an editorial cartoonist for the Central Press Association of Cleveland that distributed his work to newspapers and magazines throughout the United States. Uncle Sam knows better than to sign a "new trade treaty" with Japan in The Autograph Collector. This original was likely published in the late-1930s when Japan was trying to establish better trade relations with the USA even though it had violated a succession of previous international agreements in its invasion and occupation of China. Lead In Our Pants was published in numerous newspapers in the first half of September 1942 when the American public needed to fully get behind the effort to defeat the Axis Powers in World War II. Uncle Sam entreats a procrastinating American to "buy some war bonds...drive your car more moderately...turn in your old scrap metal and rubber...save tin cans and paper" today lest it "mean lead in our pants, tomorrow!"
