Jewellery
An 1830/40s hardstone cameo brooch, the rectangular cushion-shaped agate carved to depict the profiles of Bacchus, the god of wine and his wife Ariadnae, within a filligree and foliate mount, lacking fitting, brooch length 32.5mm. £400-£600---Found by metal detector in Friar Wadden, Dorset.------For more information, additional images and to bid on this lot please go to the auctioneers website, www.dnw.co.uk
Condition Report: The agate is chipped to the edge in front of the figures; the agate appears to be backed with a brown compound (glass?) - appears original; this shows wear to the back and is visible within the chip to the front. The agate cameo is reasonably well carved, the figures show no significant damage and minimal wear. The mount is in reasonable condition, with just slight squashing to the edges. The brooch fitting appears to have been lost early on, with evidence of solder repairs both ends - the fitting is now completely lacking.
