An 18ct gold amethyst and diamond set suite, by George Weil, 1970s, comprising hinged bangle, ring and earrings, each composed of abstract clusters of textured triangular panels, triangular-cut amethysts and brilliant-cut diamond accents, the bracelet signed ‘G. Weil’ and stamped ‘18ct’, the ring centred with an oval mixed-cut amethyst and stamped with maker’s mark (rather indistinct) and ‘18c’, the earrings with clip and post fittings and hallmarked for London 1976, signed and with maker’s mark ‘GW’, earring length 34.5mm, ring size O. £6,000-£8,000---George Weil was born in Vienna in 1938, part of a Jewish family who fled Antwerp for London in 1939. He trained as a jeweller and spent some time at St Martins' School of Art. His jewellery shows strong sculptural influences, reminiscent of the work of his contemporary Andrew Grima. The textured gold and asymmetric forms are typical characteristics of the British goldsmiths of the 1960s. Condition Report: The earclips and bangle show light surface wear only, the amethysts are bright and well matched, a few are chipped to the points. The diamonds are bright and lively. The ring is distinctly more worn, the mount and the amethysts are rubbed, and the amethyst has a feather/veil inclusion across the centre of the stone. Gross weight of suite 105.7gm.
