Jim Dine was educated at the University of Cincinnati, at the Boston Museum School and in 1957 he graduated in fine arts from the University of Ohio. Settling in New York, he began to associate with a circle of artists that included Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg and Roy Lichtenstein. Dine can be considered the father of the happening, organizing in 1959 the performance of The Smiling Worker, which was soon followed by others. In 1967 he moved to London, where he devoted himself to graphic work and drawing. In 1971 he returned to the United States and devoted himself to figurative drawing. He also worked in sculpture in the early 1980s, during which time he created works based on well-known Greek sculptures such as the Venus de Milo in the Louvre Museum.
