Jimmy Carter ALS to Columnist "Ann Landers" One Week Before 1976 Election, w/ Her Handwritten Notes
ALS
An autograph letter from future President Jimmy Carter to longtime advice columnist Eppie Lederer, better known by her pen name Ann Landers. 1p on personal stationery, measures 5.5" x 8.25", Plains, GA, October 27, 1976. Signed at conclusion as "Jimmy" just one week before winning the presidential election, he thanks Lederer for meeting him at the airport. Together with its original mailing envelope, marked "Personal" in the lower left, in addition to a single sheet of Lederer's handwritten notes to a staffer in which she requests them to "…ask for Carter's itinerary." Letter exhibits light toning and scattered handling marks throughout, otherwise near fine.
From The Doug Wertman Collection. Accompanied by a photocopy of Lederer's original correspondence to Carter, dated October 17th. In part: "I'd like to meet up with you somewhere - attend a lunch or dinner - at your side. One picture on the AP wire is the most effective endorsement there is. I'll bet every one of my 890 papers would print it."
Carter's response reads in full:
"I love you! Your getting up so early & fighting a snowstorm to come to the airport is something I'll never forget. It is typical of your warmth and concern for others. It's easy to understand why so many millions of people care for you. Thank you - again."
Esther "Eppie" Lederer (1918-2002) was a popular American advice columnist and nationwide media celebrity. She began writing the "Ask Ann Landers" column in 1955 and continued for the next 47 years, by which time its readership totaled approximately 90 million people. With such an expansive audience, her endorsement would have been a valuable asset to Carter's campaign, even in the week leading up to the election. Later in 1977, President Carter appointed her to a six-year term on a cancer advisory board.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
