Jiro Yoshihara (1905-1972) Ink On Paper

Black ink drawing on wove paper, untitled abstract, signed* (Jiro Yoshihara, 1905-1972). Circa 1960-70. 8 x 11 3/8 inches. Very good condition. Unframed for inspection and shipping. Sold without frame.

Lot Note: Jiro Yoshihara wrote the "Gutai Manifesto" in 1956. He was the leader of the so-named group of internationally acclaimed Japanese avant-garde artists and worked in surrealist and abstract expressionist painting styles before turning, in his final years, to the repeated depiction of circles.

Provenance: Colonel Norman Van Meter, Tokyo/New York. Acquired by the owner's family from the above, possibly circa 1960-70. Colonel Van Meter was a personal friend of the owner's family and was a noted collector of Asian and Chinese artifacts. In 2016 Preston Hall Gallery sold several other works from the Van Meter collection.
