Essay:
After living in France for 25 years, Joan Mitchell embarked on a trip to New York in 1981 to produce her first suite of lithographs with Tyler Graphics. Persuaded by master printmaker Kenneth Tyler, Mitchell translated her painterly vision into a series of ten original lithographs. Tyler embraced the artist's adoration for color and her precision in its use, allowing her to work with more distinct colors than ever before.

The 'landscapes' in Bedford Series portray an inner vision and express emotions while simultaneously revealing the artist's acceptance and rejection of boundaries: the boundaries of the paper, the margins, and the lithographic process itself. Her imagery stands in direct contrast to these constraints, evoking a sense of freedom and creative fluidity. Bedford Series demonstrates the transfer of energy between the artist and the paper and marks the beginning of a fruitful relationship with Tyler Graphics.
