Note:
Joan Souter-Robertson was born in the United Provinces of India where her father held a civilian post. In 1925 she began studying with Andre L'Hote in Paris. In 1936, she married Jacques Cocheme, a Frenchman from Mauritius who was a biologist and an agroclimatist. They traveled for long periods to Syria, the Sudan, Kenya and Italy. Souter-Robertson returned to London and specialized in portraits of children.
