Joaquin Mir Trinxet Palma de Majorca
Joaquín Mir Trinxet
Barcelona 1873 - 1940
Palma de Majorca
Oil on canvas
Signed on the bottom left Joaquin Mir
46,7 x 56 cm ; 18⅜ by 22 in.
Catalogue Note:
Joaquim Mir settled in Mallorca in 1900 and remained there—while making occasional trips to Barcelona—until 1904. These four years were crucial to the artist’s development as a painter. Deeply moved by the beauty of the island’s spectacular landscapes, he developed a genuine passion for Mallorca’s most inaccessible and least-visited areas, such as the Serra de Tramuntana, whose steep peaks and unfathomable gorges fascinated him. He combines them with an explosive, colorful palette of rare intensity that would mark a turning point in his painting style.
But the artist also painted coastal scenes, and in particular more urban landscapes, as is the case here with this view of Palma de Mallorca, taken from the western shore of the harbor, offering a view of the old town and the cathedral, sublimely illuminated by the rays of the setting sun, which contrasts with the foreground, already shrouded in darkness.
