Dick Flood collected hats, he obsessed over hats, he believed that a person's hat showed his personality and the way he lived his life. The hats were his remembrances of his artist friends. It appears that Joe De Yong helped start this passion and that he had the same thoughts about the hats.
From the Billings Gazette July 16, 1972: "Another feather in the center's cap is the famous Dick Flood hat collection which Jernberg is now in the process of preparing for display.....” story about the Yellowstone County Western Heritage Center and director the John Jernberg.
These hats were exhibited in museums and galleries for many years and were his connection with some of the most famous and important artists and scholars of the American West.
