[ translate ]

Joe Parrish (American, 1905-1989) Trying to Drown Out the Wails with Harmony, Chicago Tribune newspaper cartoon, January 19, 1945 India ink on heavyweight paper 12 x 12-1x4 inches (30.5 x 31.1 cm) (image) Signed lower left: Parrish Self-taught cartoonist Joseph L. Parrish was hired as cartoonist at the Nashville Banner newspaper when he was 20 years old, and in 1929 he moved to the Nashville Tennessean. In 1936, Parrish became chief editorial cartoonist for the Chicago Tribune and remained in that position until he retired in 1970. His work often appeared on the newspaper's front page, and it was syndicated to newspapers throughout the United States. In his retirement Mr. Parrish wrote and drew the comic strip Nature Notes for the Tribune. The August 1941 declaration of the Atlantic Charter by President Franklin Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill committed their countries to deny territorial acquisition and promote self-determination, disarmament and collective security in the post-war world. This fine editorial cartoon by Joseph Parrish published on the front page of the Tribune on January 19, 1945, features outstanding caricatures of Roosevelt and Churchill. It is highly critical of the intent of Joseph Stalin and the USSR to subjugate Poland and Eastern Europe even before the end of the war in Europe. In fact, it portrays Roosevelt and Churchill in a poor light, as complicit in the developing scheme. It is an insightful and sharp portrayal of Allied cynicism and Russian brutality toward smaller and weaker nations that followed the defeat of Germany. Examples of this cartoon viewed on internet newspaper archives indicate that it was published in color in some newspapers. This conclusion is borne out by the included 10" x 12" print hand embellished with watercolor of the cartoon bearing the "1945 Jan 17" date and time stamp of the Tribune on the back. This original is inscribed and signed by the artist in the bottom margin: "To Murray Harris with the best wishes of Joe Parrish."
