Beautiful late 19th century summer marine with a view of an Italian port city with fishing boats. Particularly well painted by the Viennese painter Georg Fischhof, born in Vienna in 1849 or 1859 and died there in 1914 or 1920.
The date of birth and death is mentioned in Fuchs as 1849 and in Thieme Becker as 1859.
Used the pseudonyms J. Wagner, K. Schwartz, M. Schwartz and Joh. Wagner. This painting is signed Joh Wagner.
Georg Fischhif lived and worked in Vienna, Netherlands (1895) and often stayed in Italy.
Studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts under the direction of the genre painter Friedrich Sturm and at the Munich Academy.
Painted cityscapes and genre paintings, but is best known for his excellent Mediterranean themes.
This particularly beautiful work is in good condition, has some age crackle and has some small restoration spots. On the back is an old, original sticker that says "
Fisher boats bei Cu. . . . . Italien". The place name is difficult to read.
The canvas size is 68x55 cm.
