Johan Hendrik van Mastenbroek
The harbour of Rotterdam
Oil on canvas. 64 x 91 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: J H v Mastenbroek 95.
J. H. van Mastenbroek is best known as a painter of the ports of Rotterdam. His works depict the technological progress and rapidly increasing trade that have made Rotterdam one of the world’s most important seaports. This painting, dated 1895, is a very early work by the artist, who was only 20 years old at the time but was already highly successful. It depicts the characteristic profusion of steamships, sailing ships and boats beneath a high, cloudy sky, which van Mastenbroek renders in the atmospheric, Impressionist style of the Hague School.
