Johann Michael Hambach is mentioned in the registers of the Cologne painters' guild in the second half of the 17th century. They record not only that he lived and worked in the city, but also that he belonged to the followers of Nikolaus Gulich's protest movement and was himself called to account as a "tumultuous man". His works are rarely signed. The most important reference work is a painting in the Gemäldegalerie of Schloss Schleissheim, which is fully signed and dated 1675.
