Johannes Antonius Canta belonged to a small group of Dutch genre painters of the early 19th century. Unlike his contemporaries, who mainly devoted themselves to historical depictions, Canta mainly chose domestic subjects and landscapes with mothers and children playing, sometimes with a religious slant. He also devoted himself to painting portraits. Canta lived and worked in Rotterdam almost all his life. From 1833 he took part in the annual Exhibitions of Living Masters. The performance offered fits completely into the artist's oeuvre and shows a beautiful interior with children and a pigeon flying in. The painting is signed on the back, on the panel.
