The landscape painter Johannes Bartholomäus Duntze entered the Munich Academy in 1838 and later studied in Berlin and Antwerp. Following a stay with Alexandre Calame in Geneva from 1851 to 1855, Duntze settled in Düsseldorf in 1856 - the year this work was painted. After this he undertook various sojourns to Norway, Switzerland, Tyrol, Holland, and Belgium. His landscape themes were highly popular and the majority of his works are now in German or English private ownership.
