The picturesque city of Rouen in Normandy attracted many romantic artists in the nineteenth century. Bosboom and his friend Wijnand Nuijen visited the city on their trip to France and made numerous sketches which they used as inspiration for paintings they made in their studios in The Hague. In 1839 Bosboom made another trip to Rouen with Cornelis Kruseman (1797-1857). The present painting probably finds his origin in this study trip. Another testimony of this trip to Rouen is the famous 'View of the Parisian quay and main church of Rouen', dated 1839, in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, inv. no. SK-A-4934.
