Portrait of a Young Child with an Alphabet Book. Unsigned, identified in a letter from G.C. Neagle, the artist's son. Oil on canvas, 24 x 20 in., framed. Condition: Lined, retouch primarily to the edges of the composition, scattered minor paint losses, fine craquelure, varnish discoloration.

N.B. A copy of a letter from John Neagle's son accompanies the lot. The letter indicates that the subject of this portrait, described simply as "Portrait of a Seated Girl," is the daughter of Mr. Holmes and was shown at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in April, 1862. It is listed in The Annual Exhibition Record of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as "Portrait of a Child," and the lender is Mr. George W. Holmes.
