John Coovert was born in Kentucky, and lived in the Mississippi River town of Greenville.He was well-known for his images of African American workers in the cotton industry.He won a gold medal at the Paris Exposition of 1889. His panoramic views of the cotton fields are in the collection of the Library of Congress.Coovert eventually moved with his wife to Memphis.
