John Cordrey, British c.1765-1825- A coach and four in an landscape at dusk, a town beyond; oil on panel, signed (lower left), 32.6 x 41.7 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's South Kensington, 10 June 2004, lot 114. Note: Very little is known about the life of John Cordrey. He painted, almost exclusively, pictures of coaches, which are rendered architecturally and with great attention to detail, suggesting that he may have been a coach designer. His technique has a primitive quality to it, yet his works are full of exacting detail. The horses are invariably in step with one another and generally travel from right to left across the composition.
