John Ernest Breun RBA, British 1862-1921- Portrait of a lady of Violet Hill, Bray, Co. Wicklow, Ireland, within feigned oval; pastel on paper, signed and dated '1899' (upper right), bears old labels attached to the reverse, 73.5 x 58.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Violet Hill is an 1862 Victorian country house, designed by the Irish architect William Fogerty, and gabled in the Tudor-Gothic style. Despite in the 1970s the house being subdivided into several apartments, it is still in its original condition, and for a time during this period, it was lived in by the actor Sean Connery. John Ernest Breun studied art at South Kensington and at the Royal Academy Schools. He often exhibited at the Royal Academy during 1882-1904 and at the Royal Society of British Artists in the 1890s.
