John F. Kennedy, Jr. Autograph Manuscript Signed - Middle School English Assignment on Faust (1974–75)
Autograph manuscript signed "John Kennedy," a handwritten “English” quiz or homework assignment about the tragic play Doctor Faustus, written by Kennedy as a student at the Collegiate School in New York City, circa 1974-1975. The composition is written in pencil on two 8.5 x 11 sheets of lined notebook paper and is signed at the upper left by a 14- or 15-year-old Kennedy. The assignment reads:
“I. A. Faust stated this quote, it was just when Faust and the three scholars saw Helen of Troy as a result of Fausts conjuring. The scholars had just left when Faust said this. / B. This was said by one of the scholars when they learned of Faust’s sale of his sole. / C. Faust said this to Mephistopheles when he was thinking of going back to the lord. I think it means hateful man.
II. I think when you put horns on a nights head it means that he is married. The night stated that he was a bachelor and Faust did this to embarrass him.
III. He said that when he put his horse in the water it turned and vanished or turned to a ‘bottle of hay.’
IV. I think that he was an assistant to the devil. He ridiculed Faustus about going to the devil and told him how terrible it would be.
V. 1. Pantomime - a show done in pantomime. / 2. morality play - a lesson is taught. / 3. Burlesk - a play making fun of something, usually society."
Kennedy begins section VI by defining vocabulary words (audacious, ambiguity, canonize, sundry, renowned, and surfeit) before crossing them out and starting a new vocabulary list on the second sheet, which also contains the seventh and last section: Kennedy is asked to analyze the grammar of the nursery rhyme Jack Sprat. Kennedy received a score of “83” for his work, which contains red ballpoint marks and edits by his teacher. In fine condition.
