John Gibson is an American painter known for still-life compositions of colorful, patterned spheres that explore the illusion of three-dimensional space on a flat surface. Born in Northampton, Massachusetts, he earned his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and his MFA from Yale University. Influenced by Giorgio Morandi’s carefully arranged still lifes, Gibson uses a seemingly simple subject to investigate balance, geometry, light, and shadow. His stacked or clustered balls combine convincing volume with decorative patterns that play against their rounded forms, creating a tension between realism and abstraction. His work is represented in collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
