John H. Hunter (American, b. 1934) is an American painter, collagist, and printmaker known for densely layered, satirical compositions populated by caricatured figures, animals, handwritten text, and references to contemporary culture. Born in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania, Hunter studied at Pomona College and the Fremont Graduate School before becoming especially active in lithography at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop during the 1960s. His prints combine inventive draftsmanship with an irreverent, cartoon-like visual language and were frequently produced in collaboration with Tamarind’s master printers. His works are held in prominent institutional collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, and Amon Carter Museum of American Art.

Tamarind, 1969, color lithograph from zinc, stone, and aluminum in orange, brown-green, and light violet on uncalendered Rives paper. A densely drawn, whimsical field of caricatured figures, birds, animals, mushrooms, portraits, and fantastic vegetation surrounds a large central white cross-like form, while hand-lettered phrases including “Tamarind comes to New York!,” “Tamarind National Forest no dragons,” and “You can see some of us at MOMA” turn the composition into a celebration of the workshop and its community. Printed by John Sommers and published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop. Issued in an edition of 20, with nine additional Tamarind impressions. Inscribed in graphite across the lower portion “Tamarind,” “TAM IMP,” and signed “John Hunter,” with the Tamarind and Sommers blindstamps. The verso is inscribed “2606” and “uncalendered Rives BFK.” "Tamarind impression” identifies this example as an impression retained by the workshop outside the regular numbered edition. Sheet measures approximately 33 x 20 inches. The sheet shows light overall toning with minor scattered spotting and handling, with faint discoloration and image offsetting visible on the verso. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
