John Hancock Superb PSA Encapsulated & Graded Senate Traveling Expenses

1p partially printed, measuring 6.25" x 7.75", Boston, dated July 6, 1785. Signed "John Hancock" as Governor of Massachusetts. Addressed to Hon. Henry Gardner Esq., Treasurer, to "pay unto The Members of the Honble Senate for their Travel & Attendance at the General Court from 30th May last to the Sixth inst. the Sum of Fourteen hundred & Eighty Pounds one Shilling New Emission in full discharge of said Service." Countersigned by John Avery, Secretary. The document has been encapsulated and authenticated [NM-MT8] by PSA/DNA. With flattened folds, light toning, and a few ink spots. There is a small tear that has been patched on verso. Wax seal remnants and staining at the top right corner on verso. Boldly signed.

John Hancock is best remembers for his bold and eye-catching signature on the Declaration of Independence, but he continued to have a prominent role in the American Revolution and the founding of our country after the war. In 1780, Hancock was elected governor of Massachusetts and held the position from 1780-1785, and again from 1787 to his death in 1793.
