John Haven Family Mourning Brooch w Provenance

Antique 19th C Mourning Brooch w Important Provenance. This 14kt yellow gold mourning brooch halo of seed pearls holds two locks or hair braided together belonging to John Haven (1766-1845) and his wife Ann Woodward Haven (1771-1849). The back is inscribed John Haven Oct 23rd 1845 AE 79, Ann Haven January 3rd 1849 Aged 78 Years. The Haven's were a wealthy shipmaster and merchant family from Portsmouth, New Hampshire who owned a large mansion there at 3 Islington Street. Both John and Ann Haven had their portraits painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1824. John Haven was involved in the war of 1812 and along with his brother Nathaniel brought goods to the United States from England and the West Indies. Measures 1.25 inches in length.
