Known for: Mountain landscape, still life, etcher
Biography: In 1868, John Henry Hill made a trip to the West as part of the Clarence King survey expedition, and on this trip he did sketches of Idaho, Nevada, Yosemite, and northern California. After about two years, he returned to New York where he had a studio on an island in Lake George. There he developed his western sketches into large oils. His diary and many of his paintings are in the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, New York.
