John Lee (Korean/American, 20th c.), Landscape III, c. 1970 Color Etching

[ translate ]

John Lee was a Korean-American printmaker active in the United States around 1970. Lee’s landscapes rely on compressed horizons and heavily worked printing surfaces, making the terrain appear worn into the paper rather than conventionally observed.

Landscape III, circa 1970, is a color etching in yellow and earth-toned inks with black and blue accents on wove paper. A dark vertical passage divides the composition, while a pale peach form pushes forward from the center and a narrow blue opening recedes behind it. Across the upper half, scored bands suggest an eroded shoreline or low settlement beneath a brushed yellow sky. Titled in pencil “Landscape III” lower left, numbered “67/150” lower center, and signed “John Lee” lower right. Sheet measures approximately 24.375 × 18.125 inches. Condition shows light overall toning with a faint prior mat line and minor handling marks; the sheet is backed to board with old tape visible along the verso edges. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
