Lizar's respected anatomical work was issued in 12 parts from 1822 onwards with the text in octavo (not here present); this volume contains the plates for parts 1-6 only. The detailed lithographs were engraved by John Lizars and his artist brother William; their brother Daniel was the printer. Lizars (c. 1787-1860) had been a naval surgeon prior to his position as professor at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.
