Provenance
Private collection, Canada (likely acquired in the 1960's), thence by descent.
The present work is a fine example of Milen's Arran paintings. Sannox Bay is less than 3 miles from where John Maclauchlan Milne lived at High Corrie, north of Brodick, on the east coast of the island of Arran. He first visited Arran in 1939 and his studio exhibition in Dundee in April 1940 included his paintings of Iona and Arran. From 1939, his exhibits at the Royal Scottish Academy and at the Royal Glasgow Institute included many Arran pictures.
Sometime in 1940/41, after more than 30 years, he finally left Dundee and he would live on Arran until near the end of his life in October 1957. Initially he lived in a boarding house at the northern end of the village of Corrie, but after meeting the woman who became his second wife, they lived at Seaview in High Corrie.
Most, possibly all, of Milne's Arran paintings are from locations within about 3 miles of High Corrie and he painted his colourist landscapes from Brodick Bay to Glen Sannox. Sannox Bay was a favourite location.
