It was rare for John Maclauchlan Milne to write the titles of his paintings on the reverse. In March 1933 he learnt that, after several attempts, he had been elected as an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA). This coincided with his exhibition in Dundee with friends and fellow artists Stewart Carmichael and Alec Grieve. Milne's work was already framed and some of the pieces had been offered at his studio exhibition in October the previous year. To mark his progress at the RSA, he added the title and his signature (with his new ARSA designation) to some of his paintings on the reverse.
Local hotel records confirm that Milne stayed on the island of Iona in 1937, 1938 and 1939. The first of his Iona paintings were included in his solo exhibition at the Pearson & Westergaard gallery in Glasgow in September-October 1937.
In February 1937 he learnt that he had been elected as an academician of the RSA. As in 1933, he added the title and his signature to the reverse of these Iona watercolours, possibly to emphasise his new professional status (and to add value to his work). A watercolour entitled Summer Seas, Iona was exhibited at the Society of Scottish Artists (no. 121, 10 Dec. 1937 to 22 Jan. 1938).
The titles Summer Seas, Iona and Sound of Iona were used by Milne on different oils and watercolours including those exhibited at the RSA in 1938, and at the Royal Glasgow Institute (RGI) in 1938 and '39.
Milne's 50-year career as a professional artist can be divided into distinct periods, such as Paris in the early 1920s, then the Côte d'Azur, then the Scottish Highlands in the mid-1930s, before Iona in the late-1930s and the final phase on Arran. These two watercolours are typical of his paintings from the North End of the island and reminiscent of works by his fellow colourists S.J. Peploe and F.C.B. Cadell.
