John McCain (1936 – 2018) was an American politician and military officer who served as a United States Senator from Arizona from 1987 until his death in 2018. He was known for his leadership, integrity, and dedication to public service, as well as his maverick approach to politics.McCain was born into a military family and followed his father and grandfather's footsteps by attending the United States Naval Academy. He served as a naval aviator during the Vietnam War and was captured by the North Vietnamese after his plane was shot down in 1967. McCain endured more than five years of captivity, including torture and solitary confinement, before being released in 1973.After returning from Vietnam, McCain continued his military career, eventually retiring from the Navy as a captain. He then entered politics and was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1982. He was a strong advocate for military intervention in conflicts such as the Gulf War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In the 2008 election, he faced off against Democratic nominee Barack Obama, ultimately losing the election but earning respect for his gracious concession speech and his call for unity and bipartisanship.Throughout his career, McCain was admired for his willingness to reach across the aisle and work with members of both parties to find common ground.
