John McLaughlin (American, 1898-1976), Untitled (TAM.811), 1963, Color Lithograph
John McLaughlin (American, 1898-1976) was a self-taught painter and a central figure in the development of Southern California hard-edge abstraction. Rather than beginning with recognizable subjects and gradually simplifying them, McLaughlin worked directly with no7nobjective arrangements of rectangles, bars, and open fields, often using black, white, gray, pale blue, green, yellow, and red. His compositions give unusual weight to the empty spaces between forms, an approach closely tied to his long study of Japanese and Chinese art, particularly the spare landscapes of the Zen painter Sesshu Toyo. McLaughlin was included in the influential 1959 exhibition Four Abstract Classicists alongside Karl Benjamin, Lorser Feitelson, and Frederick Hammersley, helping define the Los Angeles hard-edge movement. His work is represented in major collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where a substantial retrospective, John McLaughlin Paintings: Total Abstraction, was organized in 2016-17.
Untitled (TAM.811), 1963, color lithograph in gray and yellow on Rives BFK paper by John McLaughlin. The composition is constructed from a symmetrical arrangement of broad vertical fields separated by narrow unprinted bands, with yellow passages. The work is identified as Tamarind catalogue no. 811 with Aris Koutroulis as printer; it was published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles. The work was issued in an edition of 18. This impression is inscribed in graphite on the verso "Tam Imp," signed "John McLaughlin," and dated "5/24/63," with Tamarind and Aris Koutroulis blindstamps and the workshop number "811"; "Tam Imp" identifies an impression retained by the workshop outside the numbered edition. Sheet measures approximately 18 x 13.25 inches. The sheet shows light toning and minor handling; image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
