John Minton, British 1917-1957 and Michael Ayrton 1921-1975 - Exquisite corpse 'Eugene Delacroix' (with 'Exquisite Corpse on the reverse'), c.1939; ink on paper, inscribed 'Michael Ayrton and John Minton Eugene Delacroix', 27.5 x 9.7 cm: together with another ink on paper by the same artists of the same subject, 28 x 10 cm (2) (ARR) Provenance: gifted to Michael Middleton in 1939 and thence by descent Note: The artist and writer, Michael Middleton, was a friend of John Minton and Michael Ayrton, travelling with them to Cassis in the late 1930s and wrote articles on the artist including ‘Four English Romantics’, in Orpheus, vol.1, 1948 and the catalogue for the show 'John Minton 1917-1957: An Exhibition of Paintings, Drawings and Illustrations' for the Arts Council in 1958.
