Private Collection, Oklahoma
A hallmark suite by the New Mexico-based painter known for his Fauvist-inflected palette and bold, gestural line, the Custer Suite presents five individual portrait studies of principal figures from the Battle of the Little Bighorn: General Custer, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, Chief Joseph, and an Arapaho chief. Each is rendered in Nieto's signature high-key color and confident brushwork. Nieto's work resists literal ethnographic portraiture in favor of an expressive, almost totemic treatment of his subjects, and this suite is counted among his best-known print series, with examples held in institutional collections including the Albuquerque Museum. Sold as a complete set of five, together with the accompanying John Nieto Retrospective portfolio book.
