John Paul Jones (American, 1924-1999), Untitled, 1962 Lithograph

[ translate ]

John Paul Jones (1924–1999) was an American painter, printmaker, sculptor, and educator whose national reputation during the 1950s and 1960s rested largely on his figurative drawings and prints. After studying printmaking at the University of Iowa, Jones was recruited in 1953 to establish the printmaking program at UCLA and later taught at the University of California, Irvine. His works of this period often present solitary figures whose features emerge from rubbed, scraped, and heavily worked passages of ink. Faces remain recognizable but incomplete, giving the subjects a remote, dreamlike presence without abandoning the human figure. Jones received a major solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in 1963, and his work is represented in collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, and Laguna Art Museum.

Untitled is a 1962 lithograph in black on a tall, narrow sheet of natural-toned paper, printed and published by Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles. Two small profiles occupy the otherwise open composition: a dark, loosely rendered head near the upper center and a larger profile enclosed within a rectangular field below. Inscribed “Tam. Imp.” and initialed “J.P.J.” in graphite along the lower edge, identifying the sheet as one of nine Tamarind impressions outside the numbered edition of 20; with the Tamarind bell and Joe Zirker printer blindstamps at lower left. Sheet measures approximately 15.25 × 5.75 inches. The sheet exhibits toning, prominent moisture staining in the upper-left area and along the left edge, scattered smaller stains and marks, and minor handling wear; with deckled edges. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
