John Paul Jones (American, 1924-1999), Untitled, 1962 Lithograph

[ translate ]

John Paul Jones (1924–1999) was an American painter, printmaker, sculptor, and educator whose national reputation during the 1950s and 1960s rested largely on his figurative drawings and prints. After studying printmaking at the University of Iowa, Jones was recruited in 1953 to establish the printmaking program at UCLA and later taught at the University of California, Irvine. His works of this period often present solitary figures whose features emerge from rubbed, scraped, and heavily worked passages of ink. Faces remain recognizable but incomplete, giving the subjects a remote, dreamlike presence without abandoning the human figure. Jones received a major solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in 1963, and his work is represented in collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, and Laguna Art Museum.

Untitled is a 1962 lithograph from stone in black on natural Nacre paper, printed by Joe Zirker and published by Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles. Inside a lightly ruled square, only the eyes, nose, mouth, and a few lines defining the shoulders are printed, leaving most of the face nearly absorbed into the paper. Inscribed “Tam Imp” and initialed “JPJ” in pencil lower right, identifying a Tamarind impression, with the Tamarind and Joe Zirker printer blindstamps in the lower margin. Sheet measures approximately 15.25 × 11.125 inches. Condition shows substantial moisture staining extending from the left edge into the composition and across the lower sheet, with heavier corresponding staining on the verso, overall toning, diagonal and handling creases, and deckled edges. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
