A typed letter signed by John Pershing regarding a testimonial for baseball player Walter Johnson. 1p, measuring 7" x 9.25", Washington, D.C., dated July 16, 1927. Signed "John J Pershing" and addressed to General Anton Stephan for the Walter Johnson Twentieth Anniversary Testimonial Committee. With flattened mail fold and uneven toning. Mounting residue on verso. Boldly signed. Accompanied by a JSA LOA.

Typed on "General of the Armies" letterhead, the letter reads in part: "?regarding the testimonial to Walter Johnson, please consider me available for service in any capacity you may think best. It is very likely, however, that I shall be absent from the city at the time. Nevertheless, I would like to add my mite to the testimonial to one of the finest characters in the baseball world, our own Walter Johnson?"

Walter Johnson (1887-1946) played the entirety of his 21-year-long career as a pitcher for the Washington Senators from 1907 to 1927. His twentieth anniversary with the Senators was held at Griffith Stadium on August 2, 1927, scheduled right before a game against the Detroit Tigers. As part of the celebration, a presentation of contributions to testimonials was presented by Secretary of State Frank B. Kellogg.
