John Rathbone,
British c.1750-1807-

A Cottage in Patterdale Westmoreland;

oil on canvas, 49 x 65.5 cm.

Provenance:
with R & A Ackermann's Gallery of Fine Arts, London.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Versions of the present work exist by Phillippe Jacques de Loutherbourg (1740-1812) and Julius Caesar Ibbetson (1759-1817).

Rathbone's works exhibit similarities to those of his contemporary George Morland (1763-1804), and indeed he collaborated on a number of occasions with Morland and Ibbetson (1759-1817) with these two artists sometimes painting the figures in his landscapes. In the present work, Rathbone presents a heavily romanticised depiction of rural simplicity with rustic figures conversing and livestock roaming freely by an unassuming cottage. Between 1785 and 1806 Rathbone exhibited 48 landscapes at the Royal Academy and two at the Society of Artists.
