John Ritchie, British 1828-1905- An Encampment; oil on canvas, signed (lower right), 56 x 44 cm. (VAT charged on hammer price). Provenance: Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 12 July 2018, lot 57. Note: Ritchie has placed significant emphasis on the careful depiction of the objects around the campsite - in particular, the fire bellows, the hammer and the cooking pot above the fire - and he clearly favoured the meticulous depiction of objects and natural forms over the individualisation of the human figures included in the composition.
