The published a quotation from "To a God Unknown" and were arrested on charges of publishing obscene material. This letter has a copy of the court documents and is forwarded to Marshall Best at the Viking Press George Calvert Simons of Henry M. Snyder & Co. Letter to Marshall Best dated August 25th 1950. A copy of "The pearl: Realism and Allegory" by Harry Morris. Inscribed by Harry Morris to Steinbeck. A note by Joseph Spievak to the "Gentleman" at Viking Press enclosing a blurb he wrote about "The Pearl" Scribble notes on attached paper and signed "JS" Two newspaper clippings about Steinbeck detractors. "Steinbeck Detractors Sow an Unfruitful Crop of Wrath" Los Angeles Times Calendar Sunday December 23, 1962. Another from the Cleveland Press November 3rd 1962. A letter from David Hugo opposing Arthur Minzeber's article in the New York Times that excoriated Steinbeck. Dated December 9th 1962. A reply by Steinbeck Secretary Janet Beckman dated December 17th 1962. A letter from Roger Johnston about Tim Costello's death. Reminiscing that Costello thought Steinbeck was the nicest of all the writers to come in. He was bigger in size than Hemingway" Dated November 8th 1962.
