The book the rebellion of a small town occupied by Nazi forces and was made into a movie in 1943 by 20th Century Fox, directed by Irving Pichel. The film starred Sir Cedrick Hardwicke, Henry Travers, Lee J. Cobb, Dorris Bowden and Margaret Wycherly.
John Ernst Steinbeck (American, 1902 – 1968) won the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature.
