John T. LeMon, British 1866-1941- The Shipwreck; oil on canvas, signed and dated ‘J. Lemon. / 1883’ (lower left), 40.5 x 56 cm., (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection. Note: Born in Belfast in 1866, LeMon emigrated to the U.S. in 1898 and practised as an artist in San Francisco. He worked in oils and pastels, and depicted landscapes, coasts, and scenes of the San Francisco Bay area. In 1930 he moved to Portland, Oregon, where he lived until his death in 1941. The present work, painted in the artist's early years, was presumably taken off the Irish coast.
