John Tyler Autograph Letter Signed
ALS as president signed “J. Tyler,” one page both sides, 7.75 x 10, October 11, 1844. Marked "Private," a letter to Secretary of the Navy John Young Mason, in full: “I receive information from a private source of much complaint existing in New York and some trouble being likely to arise from the desperation made of the contract relative to the building ‘The Cob Wharf’ in New York. The facts as stated to me are that an order for a public advertisement for terms was issued here as orders to be made, and that a man of the name of Griffin backed by perfect security, was the lowest bidder. I learn also that this bid has been set aside by the Bureau here and that the construction of the wharf is devolved upon Capt. Stringham. Will you please look into this matter if your attention has not been heretofore particularly given to it. I cannot believe that Griffin would have been set aside without ample cause—and if it has been done upon your own view of the case I am sure it is right.” In fine condition, with writing showing through from opposing sides.
