John 'Warwick' Smith,
British 1749-1831-
Port at Terracina, Italy;
pencil and watercolour on paper, the original wash-line mount (within frame behind new mount) signed and inscribed 'Port at Terracina / by J. Smith' verso, 17.5 x 25 cm.
Note:
John 'Warwick' Smith studied under Sawrey Gilpin (1733-1807). He worked principally as a landscape watercolourist and illustrator, in which capacity, and with the patronage of the politician Lord Greville (1746-1816), he travelled to Italy in 1776-1781 and 1785-6. Smith was clearly inspired by the Italian landscape, which formed the subject of many of his watercolours, alongside the countryside of England and Wales. Many of his works were reproduced as engravings in a number of publications, including in his 'Select Views in Italy' (1792-6), and in William Sotheby's 'Tour through Wales' (1794).
